Selling in China

What is the market like?

For nearly every product it is huge, growing strongly and likely to grow strongly for many years to come as the Chinese are encouraged to switch from saving to consumerism. Younger Chinese (you only have to watch the TV programmes) are very Western oriented in their tastes (although they like things “modified” for China) and are very brand conscious. The middle class is affluent and growing rapidly.

How do I do market research?

You can pay expensive global outfits like PriceWaterhouseCoopers to do research or you can ask worthy bodies like the China Britain Business Council to help with general stuff.  Again, there is no substitute for going to have a look. Dont think China is one homogenous market though. City and Countryside are different, Regions and Big Cities are different, North and South are different. It is not far off to imagine Europe rather than one country.

How do I start?

Barrclay Solutions will help at a very competitive cost, to draw up a Business Plan based on market research and competitive comparisons. Alternatively you can find an Agent, get Distributors on board by visiting shows, take part in Trade Missions and, most importantly, spend time out there.

Can I compete in the Chinese market?

It depends on your product. If it has something unique and will appeal to the market (such as a good brand or new invention) then price may not be so important initially. Often though, price is relevant so a Licence deal to a manufacturer in China might be the answer.
